LAUNCHING RECEPTION

The opening reception for Latin Week Houston features Venezuelan and Houston resident culinary artist Bielitski Prada. Known for her exceptional exquisite and creative cuisine, she has won several awards and is one of Houston’s top chefs in Latin gastronomy. Artist Prada will be doing a 'live paella' as part of her presentation. Also that evening, Latin Week Houston features artist Traveon Dinell Rogers' exhibition Structures and Waterways, sitting at an intersection of photojournalism and the digital humanities - a visual interplay between various mythological tropes of water and man-made structures exploring their cultural implications and historical associations through subliminal messaging. estrenos! (premieres)

Two world premieres highlight this evening in a celebration of human tenacity and search of identity, that when faced with adverse situations, are still able to shine with optimism. The first premiere, ‘Y Aun Sonrio’ (And Still I Smile) by celebrated Cuban dancer and choreographer Alexis Zanety, is a multi-discipline/media work highlighting how music, dance and beliefs, can aid in helping one find his/her identity, providing an empowering, positive powerful life experience. The cast features Latin Week’s founder and director, Raul Orlando Edwards (dancer, actor, vocals); Urban Souls Dance Company: Mayra Bullock, Courtney Sherman-Allen, Brittany Lane and Jaylon Givan; and Intuitive African Drum Culture: Chanelle Matthews, Tracie Jackson, Tarami Readus and Lewa Afrika).  The second premiere celebrates artist Polly Ferman whom faced great opposition when entering the male dominated world of Tango but today reigns as one of the genre’s greatest interpreters. ‘Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos’ is a survey of Latin music through the magic of Ferman’s playing in a multimedia performance. Violinist Eddy Marcano and dancer Mayra Bullock join Ferman as special guests; in what promises to be a fantastic evening of live performances.
